But Then I Remembered

Many of us have had times in our lives when our hearts have slowly drifted away from God where we could no longer feel His presence or hear His voice clearly.

The luring traps, troubles, and stress of this world have a constant pull on our hearts in the wrong direction.

Instead of soaring in the peace and joy of the Spirit, stress can weigh our hearts down like rocks in a backpack.

In Psalm 77, Asaph, one of David’s worship leaders, shares that he had become so burdened he could not even pray…“BUT THEN HE REMEMBERED!”

What did he begin to reminisce about?  He says he rehearsed the songs of worship he used to sing during the night and remembered the miraculous ways God had rescued Him in times past.

He reminded himself of God’s power over all creation and how the waters and the sky stand at attention waiting for His commands!

Psalm 77:2 Passion Translation- “When I was in deep distress, in my day of trouble, I reached out for you with hands stretched out to heaven.  Over and over I kept looking for you, God, but your comforting grace was nowhere to be found.”

Psalm 77:6-7 Passion Translation   “THEN I REMEMBERED the worship songs I used to sing in the night seasons, and my heart began to fill again with thoughts of You. So my spirit went out once more in search of you.”

Psalm 77:15 Passion Translation- “By your glory-bursts you’ve rescued us over and over.   Just ask the sons of Jacob or the sons of Joseph, and they will tell you!  And all of us, your beloved ones, know that it’s true!”

Psalm 40:2 Passion – “He stooped down to lift me out of danger from the desolate pit I was in, out of the muddy mess I had fallen into. Now he’s lifted me up into a firm, secure place and steadied me while I walk along his ascending path.”

Today, if you’ve found yourself drifting from God’s presence, take some time and read Psalm 77. Sing aloud the worship songs that have previously brought you comfort.

I can hear the Lord saying to us, “Remind Me of the times I found you!  Remind Me of the times I stooped down and swooped you up out of the miry clay.  I have never left you nor forsaken you. I am waiting for you to reach out to Me once again!”

If these words are tugging at your heart, take a few minutes to enjoy a soaking instrumental and ask God to take you down memory lane of all the times He has rescued you!
